An unpleasant type

There's this pompous guy who makes everything look like doom and gloom, tries to persuade others to be party to his egomaniacal pessimism (which to him is an inevitable consequence of superior wisdom), makes every simple happy thing look like a chore (while of course making an ego-boosting exercise out of his "serious, no-nonsense attitude" to life), and quixotically talks of elaborate, extremely long term plans to accomplish "great things".  There are such people around all of us, I guess, who drain us, annoy us, who make us roll our eyes, and who also unwittingly goad us with their negativity and egotism to do better and put them in their place. They too perhaps have a place in the cosmic scheme of things.
